Using LinguaFin®

LinguaFin® has been designed to be both an online translation reference tool and a tool to be used in conjunction with translation software such as Trados Studio.  This explains why it contains a mixture of terms from single word terms to full sentences.  In so far as it has been possible we have endeavoured to create terms that have an inherent logic. A PowerPoint presentation giving detailed information is available under 'About Us'.

The LinguaFin® termbase has been formatted for ease of use manually or in conjunction with translation software. At all times the goal has been to select the most accurate translation of terms. Where there is more than one translation, the most accurate is the one outside the round brackets and is often the literal translation. Other, usually less precise, translations are contained within the round brackets e.g. 'Oferta pública de subscrição inicial (OPI)' is translated as ‘Initial public offering for subscription (initial public offering; IPO)’. Sometimes the more commonly known and used term, although less precise, is contained inside the brackets e.g. in Brazilian Portuguese ‘repassado’ is translated as ‘passed on (transferred; onloaned)’. However in a banking context ‘onloaned’ is the more appropriate translation to use. Users should be aware of this.

To contextualize some of the terminology the domain to which it refers is contained within square brackets e.g. [insurance]. This usually, though not always, means that the term should only be used in this context.

Sometimes a term needs elaboration and this is provided by text enclosed in the brace brackets e.g. front loading {of fund charges}.

Occasionally, the available translation for a term is not as precise as it needs to be or is not commonly used. Where this is the case the term is italicized e.g. in Portuguese ‘taxa rasa’ is translated as ‘flat rate’ but ‘taxa fixa’ is the translation normally used. The italicization of a term indicates that a more precise or more commonly used translation should be used, if available.

For languages where there are significant variations (e.g. European and Brazilian Portuguese) the country of source of the local language term is shown. While this usually indicates that this is the translation normally used in that country, it may not always be so. Users should be aware of this.

Verbs are denoted by the presence of (to) after the English translation of a term.

Searching for a LinguaFin® term

Step 1.  Register. You cannot translate unless you are registered.

Step 2.  Log in and go to 'Free Trial'.

Step 3.  Select language pair you wish to translate from and to.

Step 4.  Type/paste in term you wish to translate. Begin to backspace once you have typed in the term. Window will open and show all terms which include some or all of the term you wish to translate. If there is no match, window will not open.

Step 5.  Select the term and hit Translate button. You now have the translation.

If you want to translate a second term, delete the existing term IN FULL and begin typing/pasting in the new term name as above. This should give you the quickest response.
